“Buying a little piece of Africa.”

A conversation with South African designer Craig Native

From July the first collection pieces will be offered at www.otto.de under the label "Native for Cotton made in Africa". How would you personally describe "The Craig Native collection"?
The Craig Native Collection is dedicated towards promoting culture in post –apartheid South Africa. I focus african influences influencing Southern Africa but executed in a quirky but sophisticated way. It’s very sport and street but mixed with tailored finishes. Buying Native, is buying a piece of Africa.

What have been your experiences during your stay here in Germany? Please tell us something which is representative or characteristic for Germany in your eyes?
Friendly people mixed with a lot of sausages (smile). And I like the mix of old and new Germany.

Some African economists demand the abolition of development aid. They argue that the problem is with the consequences. In the long term, aid makes Africa dependent. It convinces people here that they can't solve their problems by themselves. What is your personal view on this crucial matter?
Cotton made in Africa directly empowers many Africans. It is not a donation or giveaway. People find purpose and encouragement by being directly active in their income. Everyone committed to the project is involved in trade more than just receiving aid. It is a dynamic project. Being African myself, I am aware of the effects of only receiving aid, as we all can see that it is short term. The African people are becoming more knowledgeable about their surroundings and lifestyles.
